How to Read UAV Battery Discharge Curves for Heavy Payload Missions
A discharge curve is more useful than a capacity number when a UAV carries a sustained payload. It shows how voltage changes as current, temperature and state of charge change during a mission.
Start with the mission current
Compare the curve with the aircraft’s measured continuous current, not only a short take-off peak. A curve at an unrealistic light load cannot predict loaded cruise or hover behavior.
Watch voltage and temperature together
Voltage response and pack temperature should be assessed together. Ask for test conditions, current profile and cutoff criteria, then validate the result with representative flight testing.
Plan an operational reserve
Flight planning should include a reserve rather than treating the final portion of nominal capacity as scheduled mission energy. Use measured results to define return-to-home and landing thresholds.
